The recent announcements of budget cuts affecting companies and performing arts institutions at national level are placing considerable uncertainty over the whole sector. Artists, technicians, and directors of venues and festivals fear for the future of their professions and for the public service mission of culture.

The Festival d'Avignon, a member of Syndeac, fully supports the mobilisation movement calling for a moratorium on the cuts announced for 2026, and for culture's share of the state budget to be defended at 1% by 2027.

Audiences affected by the cancellations over the past few days can still transfer their tickets to the performances on 24 or 25 July.

To celebrate its 80th edition, the Festival d’Avignon raises the flag of questions. Poetic and political, intimate and collective, theatrical or choreographic, in French or Korean: a multitude of inquiries carried by the creativity of artists from across the country and around the world.

On Wednesday 24 June at 10:00 am, several thousand new seats will become available. It’s never too late to book your tickets for the 80th Festival d'Avignon.

New photos and videos are now available online for several productions from the 80th edition: pre-premieres, premieres and recent stages of the creative process, all available to view now on each production’s page.

On 26 July at 5am, the Cour d’honneur will host L'Aube des questions, the final gathering of the 80th Festival d’Avignon. Alongside Aurélie Charon, Patrick Boucheron and Tiago Rodrigues, new guests will join this collective journey shaped by questions, including Christiane Taubira, Boris Charmatz, Maria Melchior, Régine Chopinot, Laura Vazquez, Blandine Rinkel, Camille de Toledo, Léonor de Récondo and many others.

A way to greet the rising sun and carry forward the spirit of an edition shaped by curiosity, dialogue, and the questions that connect us.

The Festival d'Avignon learns with immense sadness of the passing of Edgar Morin, on 29 May 2026, at the age of 104. A Resistance fighter, sociologist, philosopher, poacher of knowledge, a century spent looking the world squarely in the face, never once turning away. A thinker of complexity, of humanity, of the fragility of civilisations, he believed deeply that culture and live performance were spaces of resistance and hope.

Once again this year, the “J’y suis, j’en suis” scheme enables young people aged 11 to 25 to experience the Festival d'Avignon in a different way. Group bookings are now open, whilst individual bookings will open on 3 April.
On the programme: 3- or 4-day stays to discover the Festival through performances, workshops, meetings with artists and opportunities to share experiences.

To ensure smooth access and prevent the website from becoming overloaded, the first phase of online ticket sales this year will operate on a time-slot basis. Once registered, each ticket holder will be allocated a specific time slot in which to make their purchases.

A discussion with Tiago Rodrigues, director of the Festival d'Avignon, focusing on the key themes of the programme for the 80th edition. This will be followed by a free ticket pre-sale. The Festival d’Avignon team will be on hand to offer advice and answer questions.

The direction and the board of the Festival d'Avignon announce the appointment of Clémentine Aubry as managing director to Tiago Rodrigues. She will take up her post in spring 2026.

With over twenty years of experience in the management and administration of cultural organisations, Clémentine Aubry has supported and developed projects for leading multidisciplinary institutions, driven by the same idea of public service in culture, with a shared focus on supporting artists and building relationships with audiences and the local community.

Applications for seasonal jobs in 2026 will open on Monday 9 March at 10am. The Festival d'Avignon is looking for ticket office staff, audience receptionists, standard receptionists, multipurpose staff for performance venues, and waiters/waitresses. Applications must be submitted via an online form only. Applications for technical positions have been open since 19 January.

The Festival d’Avignon pays tribute to Frederick Wiseman, American documentary filmmaker, who passed away at the age of 96 on 16 February 2026.

A major figure of contemporary cinema, Frederick Wiseman built, over nearly six decades, a vast body of work exploring in depth social life, institutions and human practices. Through an unadorned observational approach, without voice-over, without interviews, he shaped a cinema of reality which, through its subtlety, patience and awareness of the world, brings documentary images close to a form of poetic truth.

Following her appearance at the Festival d'Avignon 2023 with A Noiva e o Boa Noite Cinderala, the first part of her Cadela Força trilogy, Brazilian artist Carolina Bianchi returns to La FabricA at the Festival d'Avignon for a three-week artistic residency and invites the people of Avignon to share and discuss her work alongside Tiago Rodrigues, Director of the Festival d’Avignon, and Magda Bizarro, Co-Director of Programming.

On 4 March 2026, la FabricA du Festival d’Avignon will host the 5th meeting for the employment of people with disabilities in the cultural sector.

It is with profound emotion that the Festival d’Avignon has learned of the passing of Valère Novarina, one of the most singular and essential authors, directors and artists of contemporary theatre, who died on 16 January 2026 at the age of 83.

What if young people were at the very heart of programming in Europe's major cultural institutions?
That is the ambition of the EUphoric Youth project, supported by the European Commission: to give young people from across Europe a voice so that they can actively participate in artistic and cultural life and beyond that, in democratic life. The Festival d'Avignon is committing to this endeavour until 2029, alongside 10 European organisations from Norway, the Netherlands, Latvia, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Italy, Belgium, and Portugal.

Presented this summer on tour, Milo Rau's LA LETTRE, a joint production by 2025 and the Festival, returns to Avignon for a single performance on 25 January at 3pm at La FabricA du Festival d'Avignon.
This is an opportunity, if you missed it this summer or would like to see it again, to immerse yourself in this show, which is a manifesto of what popular theatre can be today. Organised by Scènes d'Avignon and the Festival d'Avignon, Fest'hiver 2026 will take place from 23 January to 1 February 2026.

The festival Vis-à-vis, a highlight of creative work in prisons, showcases collective creations in theater, dance, music, video, and podcasts. Unique in France and supported by the Théâtre Paris-Villette since 2016, it reveals the vitality of live performance as a space for openness and dialogue. From December 10 to 12 at La FabricA du Festival d'Avignon, Vis-à-vis offers a program born of demanding work and shared commitment, going beyond its social mission to affirm art in all its essentiality.

To mark European Heritage Days, the Festival d'Avignon invites you to discover the behind-the-scenes creation and history of this legendary performing arts festival through one of its most iconic venues. Accompanied by Clément Demontis, a tour guide with a passion for history, visitors will delve into almost 80 years of history, theatre and celebration that have shaped the identity of the Festival d'Avignon.

For nearly 30 years, this study has helped to better understand how the Festival is experienced by its audiences. The questionnaire consists of four sections and takes about 20 minutes to complete. All collected data are anonymous.

After English, Spanish, and Arabic, the Festival d’Avignon welcomes an Asian language that now shines across the globe: Korean. South Korean culture fascinates the world : K-pop, cinema, series, literature… But beyond this soft power, we seek to highlight the richness of Korean performing arts.

Today, on the eve of their 80th anniversary in 2027, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Festival d'Avignon and the Holland Festival are joining forces for the first time, combining their artistic visions for a special collaboration that marks the beginning of a shared journey for years to come, adding a new chapter to their shared legacy.

This year's collaborating artist Marlene Monteiro Freitas reunites with choreographer Israel Galvàn for a one-off performance of their show RI TE.
The show takes place on 25 July at 9.30pm at La FabricA at the Festival d'Avignon.

Come along to La FabricA on 26 February 2025 for the 4th rencontres pour l'emploi des personnes en situation de handicap dans la culture. This is an opportunity for people with disabilities to find out about the help and support available and to meet companies in the cultural sector to discuss recruitment opportunities.

The discussions will be translated into LSF by interpreters from URAPEDA Sud and will be accessible via instant speech transcription using the "Acceo-Tadeo" solutions.

Boris Charmatz and Emmanuelle Huynh will be presenting étrangler le temps at La FabricA as part of the 47th edition of the Les Hivernales festival. In a subtle revisiting of Odile Duboc's languorous duet, the two choreographers pay a vibrant tribute to contemporary dance in a score that is stretched and imbued with emotion.

The technical jobs for the 79th edition are now open to applications, via a form on our website.
We're looking for general, stage, lighting, sound, audiovisual and signage managers, as well as technicians in various fields, stagehands, and wardrobe supervisors and dressers.

Applications for 2025 will open on Saturday 1 March at 10am and will be submitted exclusively via an online form.

Congratulations to Lola Arias on winning the prestigious International Isben Award 2024! Following her acclaimed performance at the 78th Festival d'Avignon with Los días afuera, the Argentine writer, director and producer continues to shine.

The International Ibsen Award ceremony will take place at Nationaltheatret in Oslo (Norway) October 13th.

A true intimate and artistic portrait of Alain Crombecque, this retrospective presents many never-seen-before documents around the late director of the Festival d’Avignon (1985-1992) and the Festival d’Automne (1974-1978 and 1993-2009), which show his artistic friendships, from Peter Brook to Tadeusz Kantor and Antoine Vitez. 

The exhibition runs at the Maison Jean Vilar from Tuesday to Saturday, 2pm to 6pm, until 29 March 2025. Tickets on sale from €3 to €6.

The Festival d'Avignon will be present from 12 to 15 September at the Seuls en Scène festival at Princeton University, in New Jersey, United States, which has been inviting French theatre artists every year for the last 12 years. This 2024 edition marks the start of a partnership with the Festival d'Avignon that runs until 2026.

230 young musicians from the Démos project and the Maîtrise Populaire de l'Opéra Grand Avignon will be celebrating their work with an event concert on the stage of the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des papes. This represents 3 years of free classical music workshops. Accompanied by professional artists from the Maîtrise and the Chœur de l'Opéra Grand Avignon and the Orchestre national Avignon-Provence, nearly 400 musicians will play and sing musical compositions by Matteo Franceschini, Mozart, Prokofiev and Britten.

The Southern Region is introducing additional TER services. This year, for the duration of the Festival, TER timetables from Avignon Centre station have been extended to 11.30pm for three train destinations (Orange, Cavaillon, Arles) and one bus destination (Carpentras). These trains serve 15 communes in the Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône departments.

To encourage spectators to use soft mobility, the Festival d'Avignon has set up a car-sharing scheme in partnership with the Covoiturage simple platform.

The Festival d'Avignon is developing Artistic and Cultural Education programmes in partnership with local schools. For three evenings, secondary school students will share the stage at La FabricA to present their workshops from throughout the year!

Transmission Impossible is an immersion, exchange, and research project for young artists and performing arts students taking place within the Festival d’Avignon.

Micheline Attoun passed away on March 14 at the age of 87. A leading figure in the world of theater, she devoted her life to promoting arts and culture alongside her late husband Lucien Attoun. They leave behind them the legacy of Théâtre Ouvert.

The Festival d'Avignon is paying tribute to two immense figures in the world of theatre who recently passed away, two artists who embodied the circulation of aesthetics and European collaboration: René Pollesch and Edward Bond.

Since 2021, we've had the pleasure of welcoming more than 550 young people to explore behind-the-scenes technical professions during discovery workshops at La FabricA. These introductory workshops give hands-on experience of the behind-the-scenes trades (machinery, lighting, video, sound and costumes), accompanied by stage managers. Here's a look back at these moments of sharing and learning.
