MONDAY 30 DECEMBER 2024
It is with deep sadness that we learn of the death of Dada Masilo (1985-2024), a major figure in South African contemporary dance.
In 2022, she lit up the Festival d'Avignon with The Sacrifice, presented in the Cour du Lycée Saint-Joseph. Through her work, which weaves a link between contemporary dance and the traditions of her country, she explored universal themes with intensity.
Her death leaves a void in the world of dance, and among those deeply touched by her unique artistic vision.

At one time or another, we all have a little tune that runs through our heads. In German, there's even a rather colourful word to describe the phenomenon: Ohrwurm, ‘ear worm’. Fortunately, researchers at Reading University in England have discovered that you can get rid of them by chewing gum.

The entire Festival d'Avignon team is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Juergen Hirsch, our constant companion for more than 20 years.
A key figure in the stage machinery department, where he trained many members of the team, Juergen took part in numerous Festival tours, and this year was working as Assistant Stage Manager in the Cour d'honneur.
We are deeply saddened to have to say farewell once again to a member of our team in the summer of 2023, which leaves us with a heavy heart.
We will always remember Juergen's smile, his kindness and his voice, his rigor and his professionalism.
Our thoughts go out to his family, his loved ones, his colleagues and friends.

We are all deeply saddened by the death of Cédric Vautier, who worked with us for over 20 years.
Cédric lived in Monteux, had worked at the Festival in the lighting department, had taken part in many of our tours and had been in charge of our lighting workshops since last year. Cédric was also deeply involved with Les Hivernales,Benoît XII theatre and local associations all year round.
He was well-liked, smiling, willing and known by everyone.
We share the grief of his family, his two sons Thimoté and Nino, his companion and his colleagues who were like brothers and sisters to him.
The emotion is intense among the teams and artists, from Eisenhower to Boulbon, but also at Saint-Louis, at the ISTS where he studied, at the Cour and in every venue that goes up.
This edition of the Festival d'Avignon will be dedicated to Cédric.
Let's take care of each other.

The Festival d'Avignon is proud to present and accompany this show which marked this 77th edition. Today we will unveil the heart of the 77th edition. We are delighted to announce this celebration and to do so together, surrounded by our audience, our friends, our partners and all those who are curious about the Festival. Françoise Nyssen, our President, was delighted to be with us and to say a few words. Fate is sometimes different. Her husband, the publisher Jean-Paul Capitani, died yesterday. A fall from his bicycle. Our thoughts are with Françoise and her children and we will treasure the warm memory of Jean-Paul welcoming us this winter in the school they had built together: the Domaine du possible. So let's go and unveil this 77th edition and think of them.

François Tanguy has just left us. Early, too early, of course. The Festival d'Avignon joins in the grief of his family and all his fellow travellers on the "theatre" raft, composed of actresses and painters, authors and composers, technicians and spectators in whom he had absolute confidence... That was in 1982. Three years later, the team moved to Le Mans, the hometown of actress Laurence Chable, the soul of the troupe. It was at La Fonderie that François Tanguy's creations were born. Without establishing a calendar, nor yielding to production imperatives, "it is art that is at stake here and not communication, playful curiosity and not entertainment". An art of theatre claimed as such, of a theatre where one must "be together" to visit the place and the theatrical time. Each work by François Tanguy and the Théâtre du Radeau is the fruit of a patient and collective process, made up of research into texts, music and improvisation, which explains the rarity of the creations. He presented Ricercar in 2008 at the Festival d'Avignon.
Monday March 20th 2023
It is with great joy that we learned today of the release of Olivier Dubois. French journalist, hostage in the Sahel since 2021, he was a former student of the Lycée Frédéric Mistral of Avignon and a familiar face at the Festival d'Avignon.
7 November 2022

“Semaine d’art en Avignon” is a quote, a reference. It was the first name given in 1947 by Mayor Georges Pons and Jean Vilar to the event which would become the Festival d’Avignon. From 23 to 31 October, 2020, 7 shows will be performed in a dozen venues in Avignon and the surrounding area.
