Inviting a language to the Festival d’Avignon means first accepting that no programme could fully capture its richness and diversity. But it also means finding in that language an inspiration that moves us, that compels us to embark on journeys, make discoveries, open dialogues, and go where we wouldn’t have gone on our own. As the fifth most spoken language in the world, and second most in France, Arabic is present in Europe, even though it comes from beyond our borders. Unlike English and Spanish, featured in previous editions and which spread from Europe towards the rest of the world, Arabic carries within it different movements, journeys, and narratives.
A language of light, dialogue, knowledge, and transmission, Arabic is often—within an extremely polarised context—taken hostage by merchants of violence and hate who confine it to notions of close-mindedness and isolation, fundamentalism, and clashes of civilisations. Inviting Arabic to the Festival means choosing to confront political complexity rather than evade it and to trust in the ability of the arts to create spaces for debate and sharing.
During this 79th edition, Arabic will be represented by creators from Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Morocco, Lebanon, Iraq... Each of them with a deep connection to a country, a region, a territory. Through their language and dialects, they connect us to realities and invite us to think about how words—by changing our perception of reality—have the power to transform the history of peoples.
في المقام الأول، تعني استضافة لغة في Festival d’Avignon، تقبّل حقيقة عدم قدرة أي برنامجٍ كان، على استنزاف ثرائها وتنوعها. كما تعني العثور، في هذه اللغة، على إلهامٍ يحرّكنا، ويدفعنا إلى الشروع برحلات، واكتشافات، وإلى بناء الحوار، وإلى الذهاب حيث لم نكن نجرؤ من دونها. فتأتي اللغة العربية في المرتبة الخامسة بين اللغات الأكثر تداولاً في العالم، وفي المرتبة الثانية في فرنسا، وقد أثبتت وجودها على الصعيد الأوروبي والعالمي. على عكس الإنجليزية والإسبانية، اللتين تم استضافتهما خلال الإصدارات السابقة واللتين توسعتا من أوروبا إلى بقية العالم، تحمل اللغة العربية في طياتها تحركات، ورحلات، وروايات مختلفة.
غالباً ما تقع اللغة العربية، لغة التنور، والحوار، والمعرفة، والتواصل - في سياق يميل بشدّة إلى التطرف - رهينة تجار العنف والكراهية الذين ينسبونها إلى مفاهيم الانغلاق والانطواء على الذات، والأصولية، وصدام الحضارات. تمثّل استضافتها في المهرجان، اختيار التصدي إلى التعقيدات والصعوبات السياسية عوضاً عن تفاديها، والوثوق بقدرة الفنون على خلق مجالات للنقاش والتبادل المشترك.
خلال الإصدار الـ79 هذا، سيمثّل اللغة العربية مبدعون ومبدعات من تونس، وسوريا، وفلسطين، والمغرب، ولبنان، والعراق... لدى كلٍّ منهم صلة قوية بدولةٍ، ومنطقةٍ، وإقليم. فيربطوننا، عبر لغاتهم ولهجاتهم، بوقائع مختلفة، ويدفعوننا إلى التفكير بقدرة الكلام - عبر تغيير إدراك الواقع - على تغيير تاريخ الشعوب.
