It is with heavy hearts that we have to report the passing of Jean-Pierre Vincent, administrator of the Festival d’Avignon for many years and above all a major voice for theatre and its history.
As director of the Théâtre national de Strasbourg, of Nanterre-Amandiers, and of the Comédie-Française, he presided over a hundred creations, including his direction of Aeschylus’s Oresteia, which played at the 73rd edition of the Festival d’Avignon in July 2019.

A man of art and political engagement, with rare sensitivity and insight, he was an exceptional father, brother, and artistic companion.
His outlook on public theatre was uncompromising and always challenging, his relationship to it as demanding as it was protective, with a keen awareness of both the rights and duties of artists.

All the theatre professions he loved so much have lost his savoir-faire, his constant attention, and his benevolence.
Your loved ones are in our thoughts, Jean-Pierre. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
