France / Creation Festival d’Avignon 2026 / First time in France

How can one dance what cannot be said? In this new solo, the choreographer explores silence as a sonic and political phenomenon.

Presentation

With Muette, Boris Charmatz continues his solo work, like a counterpoint to his lush group pieces, to explore a space “where language doesn’t come out, where the tongue is silenced, where the mouth, open or closed, suggests chasms of emotion.” Conceived as a sort of sequel to his first solo, SOMNOLE, Muette is an invitation to follow the almost invisible motion of a stifled cry, of a body that takes and absorbs violence in silence, of a bubble of saliva that burst at the corner of the lips. This “dance which seethes quietly,” raw and intimate, needs little to unfold: neither music nor clothes. The choreographer bases his work on those things that exist in liminal spaces, that stupefy and leave us speechless. He aims to “dance within the inner muffling.”

보리스 샤르마츠가 선보이는 내밀하고도 가공되지 않은 솔로 작품 무에트(Muette)는 무대 위에서 다양한 형태의 침묵을 펼쳐낸다.

FDeeply committed to the world of dance since its inception, the House of Fine Jewellery reaffirmed its commitment to the art of choreography in 2020 with the launch of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.
Since its launch, the programme has supported numerous dance companies in the creation of their works, as well as the institutions that present them on the international stage. This initiative is reinforced by the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival, held in various cities around the world.
In addition to this support for creation and dissemination, increasing importance is being placed on the issues of transmission and education. Together with its partners, Dance Reflections organises residencies for professional dancers and awareness-raising activities for everyone to engage with choreographic culture. Driven by the values of creation, transmission and education, this programme forms part of a series of initiatives led by Van Cleef & Arpels. These include, in particular, the School of Jewellery Arts founded in 2012, and the ‘de Mains en mains’ event, which offers an insight into the jewellery trades.
Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is partnering with the 80th Festival d’Avignon.
