Presentation

Boris Charmatz’s relationship with the Festival d'Avignon is a true reflection of his character: intense, demanding, and constantly evolving. From La Danseuse malade, an unprecedented project with Jeanne Balibar (2010), to CERCLES, a giant open-air workshop for 200 amateurs and professionals (2024), via enfant (2011) and Liberté Cathédrale (2024), the festival has provided him with a playground for exploration that matches his creativity. A relationship that has developed into close collaboration, with Boris Charmatz leaving his mark on two editions: 2011, when he was the guest artist invited by Hortense Archambault and Vincent Baudriller, and 2024, when he was the collaborating artist alongside Tiago Rodrigues.

The creation of his new piece, Muette, offers us the opportunity to revisit his extraordinary body of work with a short profile produced in 2011 – the year of the creation of Enfant for the Cour d’honneur and the presentation of Levée des conflits at the Stade de Bagatelle – and to meet a fascinating artist who ceaselessly pushes the boundaries of choreographic language and broadens our perception of dance by taking it beyond conventional formats.
