Film-maker, writer, artist, stage director, photographer and graphic designer, Jean Michel Bruyère has created universes, worlds and imaginary people. He runs the performance group LFK, and founded the Art School Residency Man-Keneen-Ki for street children in Dakar, Senegal, presenting Enfants de Nuit with them at the Avignon Festival in 2002. Jean Michel Bruyère this time has gathered together a whole range of artists from different disciplines and backgrounds whose wanderings constitute both research and a way of life.
Jëkk (Sui in res)
The founding myth of the Vøspazàrs nomadic people still echos with the cry of the pack. Howling dogs which, according to Greek mythology, eat their young and powerful master-hunter, Acteon, the deer-man who sees Diane naked and is turned back into his animal state. Jean Michel Bruyère and LFK use this story as a basis for the creation of the Vøspazàrs people, the metamorphosis of Acteon's dogs into a wandering group of people, seeking a language and lost images in the carnage of the man who spied perfect beauty. The Jëkk, ritual festivities, commemorate the initial feast. Jëkk is also the generic name for the five evolutive “installation-performances” which will conclude at the Avignon Festival in 2005. It is a cultural and anthropological fiction, that puts the role of the spectator in a different light. Inventing a people with a specific language, of which the members of LFK are the representatives, Jëkk moves away from Western stage direction with “performed ethnocentricity” and the theatralisation of “imaginary egocentricity”. The audience will experience a shamanic reading of the myth of Acteon in the Chapelle Saint-Charles, via Sui in Res, one of the stages in this theatre of possession. Performances, music, images, sculptures, readings... fragments which are assembled and just as soon taken apart in a constantly changing universe, a world that meanders, with no fixed shape, and which is perceived differently by each spectator. Sui in Res is an unusual voyage into the “intimacy of disaster” and Jean Michel Bruyère's non-respect of any particular style, an insight into the workshop of an artist of non-discipline.
