Almost seventy years ago, La Décision (Die Entscheidung), a short didactic play by Bertolt Brecht written with Hanns Eisler, who composed the music, was censored and barred from all theatres. Some thirty years ago, the playwright, Heiner Müller, wrote in one swift lava-like flow, Mauser, his response from what was then East Germany, to his Communist elder. The time is ripe for the two plays to confront each other, for a reconstitution of this dialogue woven from one epoch to another, by two of its most talented reporters. In the meantime, the Twentieth Century has provided evidence that barbarity can have a human face. It is urgent to listen to Brecht speak, in 1930, of the march and the finalities of a revolution. It is imperative to observe the path that he describes, that of a young idealist murdered in the name of his cause. It is necessary to hear an echo of Heiner Müller\'s scream: revolution, yes, but at what cost ? Jean-Claude Fall jumps right in and places the debate in the middle of the theatre, at a time when a pathetically small part of the world lives in peace and prefers, in spite of everything to forget the utopias and rage that are tearing apart the rest of humanity. Revolution is not an option today. It is time to stop being deaf.
