Boston couple Martha and Sean Carson are about to become parents. But their lives are upended when the young woman gives birth at home and loses her baby, in spite of the assistance of the midwife, who soon finds herself sued for negligence. Eschewing sentimentalism, Pieces of a Woman shows us grief as it truly is for many: an ordeal which reveals character and awakens long-buried inner conflicts. Vanessa Kirby won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance.
