Presentation

In the fall of 2010, Patrice Chéreau returned to the theatre with Dream of Autumn. A fascinating play about desire and death, with Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Pascal Greggory.

A man and a woman who once loved each other meet in a graveyard. He has come for his grandmother's funeral, while she feels drawn to the place without quite knowing why. The man's parents, come to tell him everything they blame him for, gravitate around the lovers, who desire each other and keep getting ineluctably closer. But what have they really lived through? And is there anything left for them to live for?

Almost eight years after Phèdre, Patrice Chéreau returned to the theatre with a work by Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse. First performed in the Louvre in the fall of 2010, then on tour—including at the Théâtre national de Bretagne, in Rennes, where this performance was recorded—in a set created by Richard Peduzzi, this play calls on the living and the ghosts, desire and death, in a dizzying and fascinating ballet.

Pascal Greggory and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi lead the dance with dazzling conviction, playing with the tension of bodies and faces to express, between caresses and arguments, the pain and passions driving those lovers haunted by the fear of the end: the end of their loved ones, of their love, but also their own end.
