Having studied at fine art college, at the Marceau Mime School, and then at the Ecole de Étienne Decroux (to whom he became assistant) at the same time as Josef Nadj, dancer Thierry Baë, figured in all of Catherine Diverrès new pieces from 1986 to 1997 and in several of Josef Nadj's including Canard Pékinois (Beijng Duck) and Les Philosophes (The Philosophers).
In 1997, he started his own company called Traits de Ciel with his wife Marion, each of them creating their own pieces and at the same time pursuing research into improvisation. From Labyrinthe de la Chute (Maze of Fall) (1997) to Journal d'inquiétude (Diary of Worry) (2005), with almost twenty projects, experiements or dance pieces, Thierry Baë has followed a path mixing teaching and production.
He has also been teaching Tai-Chi Chuan for twenty years.
If you haven't come across Thierry Baë yet, his Journal d'inquiétude (Diary of Worry) will give him the necessary introduction albeit in an unusual way: in the wings of the profession, the practice of one art, dance. First, we will see a strangely out-of-synch solo. Movements start to emerge where gestual phrasing is almost simultaneously corrected by the voice of the choreographer commentating the gestures. That is followed by a film full of suspense and surprises and yes, even dance, perhaps even with a surprise (another one) guest, but it's not certain. Thierry Baë, is the anonymous choreographer in the film, a dancer and an emeritus professor in real life, and he set himself a hard task in making this film which meant setting up the production in a milieu of contemporary dance. A field where, whether administrators or programmers or funding partners, they were not easy to convince.
Life also set him a challenge with this project, as he is getting on, he had to cope with illness, and carry out research on creating, writing and screening. Fiction or reality? Something vibrates in the space in between, an empty space where invention in the form of a new portrait makes its nest, a portrait that is raw and sensitive. It is a strange elated sort of game, terribly tender and serious where everyone is self, but plays themself and their own image. An X-ray of real life of the world of bodies and of feelings.
