A Jewish author who was born in Belarus and died in Poland, Sholem An-Ski was one of the founders of Yiddish theatre at the end of the 19th Century. A fable of love and death, his Dybuk is situated in an old wood-panelled synagogue. Among the students at the Yeshiva, Khanan is studying the Cabbala. “It is not a question of fighting sin,” says the strange young man, “but of purifying it.” When he learns that Lea, the daughter of a rich merchant has become engaged to another, Khanan dies on the spot. \'Dybuk', which means \'union' in Hebrew, suggests the possession of a body by a restless soul. Lea is possessed by Khanan's spirit, her father goes to see Rabbi Azriel to free his child from its clutches. Krzysztof Warlikowski adds a short story by Hanna Krall to Sholem An-Ski's Dybuk. Krall is a Jewish Polish contemporary author. She tells the true story of Adam S., the son of a survivor of the Holocaust. Today, Adam S. lives in New York possessed by the dybuk of his half-brother, a child who died in the Warsaw ghetto. Warlikowski approaches the history of the Jewish nation from the diaspora of Central Europe before the Second World War and follows it through to today's community in the West. Having studied philosophy, 41 year-old Krzysztof Warlikowski, was also assistant to Peter Brook and to Krystian Lupa. Here he continues his investigation into the powers of “the other world” and the history of theatre itself. After Shakespeare's Hamlet and Cleansed by Sarah Kane, outstanding performances at the most recent editions of the Avignon Festival, Warlikowski's physical theatre provides another opportunity to listen to the chaos of the world.
