Sarah Kane committed suicide at the age of twenty-nine, leaving behind her a work that is radical and extreme, of a rare violence that continues to resound in theatre the world over. Krzysztof Warlikowski, a turbulent child of Poland, is a notable student of master Krystian Lupa. His productions are traversed with moral problematics and take on an aspect of the path of the cross, with punishment, redemption and purification all present. The heroes of the English woman Sarah Kane are people who are used by a whole country to call into question their own ills. A woman wants a sex change out of love for her brother who has died from an overdose. Two homosexuals are sacrificed for this cause by a Faustian doctor, who punishes with one hand and resuscitates with another. Warlikowski places his staging of this play beyond blood, sperm and sex which make Sarah Kane' s words explosive objects. Theatre deals with all this, tempering, making poetic, and in fact possible, the production. Rarely have we heard, to this extent, a worn-out woman' s desperate search for love, still oozing tenderness in the heart of the unbearable, and as nakedly as are naked actors who on stage, do not cheat.
