Presentation

Gracias a Dios is the first part of a trilogy, and opens in a museum where a curator who is slightly unbalanced and an alcoholic, presents objects related to Central America. One such piece is a ship that reached Nicaragua at the beginning of the 16th Century. He imagines that he is the captain of the vessel, and climbs on two tables - the only stage decor in all three plays - and the Spanish official in Nicaragua, playing the roles of the Conquistador and the Revolutionary consecutively, through five centuries. Bruno Boeglin evokes unending bird song, torrential rains, harsh sun rays and the country of Nicaragua, by using just two bits of wood Poca Madre ! is directed by Mexican Carlos Calvo and performed by a Mexican actress who in seventeen minutes portrays the fallen country. In Oh Oaxaca ! Catherine Marnas directs a Mexican Indian who plays out the question of the native peoples' identity. These plays describe our troubled times in a rudimentary and universal theatre that prepares our tomorrows.
