Once again this summer, just before the trumpets sound in the Cour d’honneur of the palais des Papes, Le Souffle d’Avignon will take place in the gardens of the palais. This cycle of readings highlights contemporary voices in theatre, providing authors a special space to present their texts, often before their publication. These readings in the presence of the authors invite audiences to discover contemporary writing in a historic and symbolic setting: the birthplace of the Festival d’Avignon.

Presentation

Aeschylus, shaped by war, does not celebrate victory. In The Persians, he chooses the enemy’s point of view, turning imperial defeat into an experience of fear, grief, and lament.

Written between Iran and abroad, this adaptation questions the myth of a “just” or “preventive” war. By looking at tragedy from the perspective of the defeated, it reminds us that there are no true winners and that war erodes all truth.

Grave and necessary, it uses the stage to declare, with force, a refusal of war – perhaps now more than ever.
