Cancellation of "The Emigrants" by Krystian Lupa at Festival d'Avignon

Following the cancellation of the creation of the show “Les Émigrants” at the Comédie de Genève, the Festival d’Avignon discussed the situation with the theatres involved in the production, as well as with the artistic and technical team of the show and with director Krystian Lupa. Respect for the dignity of all individuals working on an artistic project is a core value of the Festival d’Avignon and its team, and it is in this context that we sought to make the presentation of this project possible during the 77th edition. However, we regret to announce that the production conditions (unworkable time, financial, and logistical constraints) do not allow for the presentation of this project in Avignon this summer. We hope that this important work—which the Festival was fully committed to support—can be presented in January 2024 at the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe, which is currently considering all possible options to ensure that this creation is carried out successfully and in a peaceful setting. We are currently exploring options to replace this show, which was expected to be one of the major theatrical events of this edition. It is a very complex task, given the time constraints and the financial impact of this cancellation. We will announce the results of these efforts in the coming days.Spectators who purchased tickets for “Les Émigrants” will be informed as soon as possible about refund or exchange options. We thank them for their solidarity and patience.
