Hans, the offspring of a middle-class family, would like to become a mechanic, but his mother formally forbids him to take up a job that is too proletarian. Out of spite, he joins the Foreign Legion and, once discharged, becomes a policeman. He is fired for having given in to the advances of a prostitute whose identity he was checking. Because he is reduced to selling fruit in the courtyards of buildings, his family, his wife and his mistress turn away from him with contempt. Then he tries to drown his anger and humiliation in alcohol, thereby precipitating his downfall...
