Miet Warlop

Gand / Created in 2022

A concert that never stops repeating and reinventing itself... A public standing in between ecstasy and exasperation. A show-metaphor for a miniature but universal society.

Presentation

Standing in front of us, a group of musicians are alternately booed and applauded. Sitting in front of them, a mini audience changes its mind after each performance, a cheerleader keeps cheering them on, and a sportscaster provides commentary. Like a miniature society, the characters of One Song expose their desires and frustrations, rehearsing a ritual about goodbyes and new beginnings. After Milo Rau, Faustin Linyekula, and Angélica Liddell, Miet Warlop is the fourth artist to take up the challenge issued by the NTGent to create a History/ies of Theatre like only she knows how. A staging of her own obsessions to help us feel the faults and ecstasies of our expectations and invites us to form a community. A creation as collective encounter which weaves together present, past, and future, with a requiem written in 2005 as cornerstone. An eternal and repetitive play, which never really ends and which this collective experience allows us to transcend.
