A versified dialogue, incisive writing and the killing humour of 38 year-old German author Dea Loher, hang a gallery of portraits of contemporary urban bourgeoisie, peopled with individuals caught up in their social, conjugal and professional norms. Thomas admits that, “In fact, I am nothing at all.” Georg becomes enamoured with unusual experiences, Elisabeth and Irene emancipate themselves, Gottfried the banker robs his own bank, and Claire cultivates strange relationships until the group implodes. Claire's spiritual imbalance contrasts with her kind who are painfully wallowing in a “standardised maturity”. Director Krystian Lupa says, “Claire's case is symptomatic of our era. We are seeing the birth of a generation of \'children' whose parents themselves have problems with their own maturity.”A leading Polish director, Krystian Lupa teaches at the Dramatic Arts Conservatory in Cracow. Gombrowicz, Witkiewicz, Musil, Dostoyevski, Broch, Schwab, Bernhard and Gorki have all marked Lupa's path as a director. “My constant interest is transgressing the limits of the individual,” he says. “Formerly, I was interested in acts of the will and of the fruit of the imagination of metaphysical researchers. Today, what interests me are the transgressions as a result of our internal contradictions, our anxieties, pressures and the threat of duplicity which chases us away from the spheres of our spirituality.”
