It's winter in an apartment in Moscow bearing vestigial signs of past wealth. In this apartment live four domestics who had previously been in the service of the former ambassador to Afghanistan, who had been killed in an attack in that country. His daughter Tanya, emigrated to the United States and was thrown into prostitution by the deputy secretary of the party at the embassy. That was ten years ago. She returns to Moscow with her friend David, an American, half-man, half-woman. A drug addict and ill, Tanya lives in her imagination, trying to relive her lost childhood. She discovers that the past is destined to disappear as is the social class that her parents represented. Like in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, the domestics have become the masters. They have sold the furniture to live and have buried that class in the cemetery. The world of her childhood no longer exists. Dima, her childhood lover has become a wounded vagabond who plays the first ten bars of Oginski's The Polish Woman over and over again in an underground station.
