An incredulous boy watches his father dismember a wild boar in the yellow rays of car headlights one summer night in Algeria. The latest offering from Olivier Py, one of France's favourite young playwrights, is dripping in blood-red colour and torn flesh with the cruelty of a man at work and the memory of Self, as character-narrator. The hero must discard his attachment to his parents, assert himself far away from his memories, even if he must bear great suffering from the ambiguous pleasure drawn from the pain, a constant theme for this young man who identifies with the victims of this earth. There is no doubt that Theatres by Olivier Py is an autobiographical work. For Michel Raskine, the director, that is not important. It is the stagecraft that has led Raskine, a lover of contemporary works, to put on this play, that he commissioned from Py. It is not enough to tear up the family photographs, a destiny must be found, far from oneself and near other people, those people who are averse to war. Raskine knows how to highlight the jolts and failures of existence, underscoring them with either a firm or faltering line, at a distance from perfection and conformity.
