La Ribot and Asier Puga

Switzerland - Spain / Created in 2024

The alliance of dance and music to lend a poetic existence to Joanna of Castile, the forgotten and overshadowed queen of a golden century of expansion in the history of Spain.

Presentation

Dancer and choreographer La Ribot has long left her mark on contemporary dance and is now invited to the Festival d’Avignon for the first time. After falling into melancholy following the death of her husband, Queen Juana I of Castile was stripped of her crown and imprisoned in Tordesillas. In 1992, La Ribot dedicated a show—El triste que nunca os vido—to that queen sacrificed on the altar of political interests, whose destiny reveals the shadows of the Spanish Golden Age. Thirty years later, the choreographer returns to Juana 1 of Castile with Juana ficción, a collaboration with conductor Asier Puga for which she reunites with dancer and actor Juan Loriente. Accompanied by the Zaragoza Chamber Orchestra and a polyphonic choir, she delivers a raw performance which aims to give a voice back to a woman erased from history.

Música y danza se unen para dar una existencia poética a Juana I de Castilla, reina olvidada y en la sombra de un floreciente Siglo de Oro español.
