“Le Vif du Sujet” is directed by Karine Saporta, and consists of four new ballets where each dancer chooses their choreographer, a type of programme that has already been established at the Avignon Festival. This year, Dominique Mercy - known as a member of the Pina Bausch company - dances with choreographer Josef Nadj. Farid Berki, a hip-hop virtuoso, directs Kader Balarbi, a dancer with the Opéra de Paris. Mathilde Altaraz, dancer with Jean-Claude Gallotta's company, is performing a solo in front of her master. Laurence Levasseur, one of Josef Nadj's star dancers, works with Jorma Uotinen, long-standing partner of Carolyn Carlson. All the artists are recognizable by the style of a theatre, a company or a choreographer. They try their hand at a new experience, even Mathilde Altaraz is innovating in some ways as she has never danced a solo performance with Jean-Claude Gallotta. From the risk involved in their breaking new ground on a personal level, they cre-ate a fresh ballet.
