Tribute to Jean-Paul Montanari

The Festival d'Avignon pays tribute to Jean-Paul Montanari, who passed away on 25 April. A leading figure in contemporary dance, he directed Montpellier Danse for more than 40 years, accompanying numerous artists with dedication and loyalty. He shaped a daring festival that was open to the world and deeply rooted in its time.

Jean-Paul Montanari built many bridges between Montpellier and Avignon. The Festival salutes a major figure in the French cultural landscape, whose commitment has helped to foster dialogue between disciplines and institutions. Thanks to him, several artists have been welcomed on Avignon stages, fostering a dialogue between our two events, between disciplines and between audiences. The Festival salutes a fellow traveller, a passer of gestures, a builder of links.

Faced with these questions that we have all asked ourselves, the Festival works to make theatre accessible to all. The "Fisrt time" project was born out of the desire to answer these questions, to respond to a desire to feel at home or to make coming to a performance more comfortable.

Media education

Because images, sound and digital technology can whet the appetite for live performances, the Festival develops media education projects. Throughout the year, and then in immersion in July, hundreds of young people appropriate the codes of the new media formats to make their voices and those of others heard.

The Festival d'Avignon offers practical workshops designed for as many people as possible, inviting the public to get into action : introductory modules to the world of the performing arts or to reinforce an artistic and cultural education programme.
