Noé Soulier

France / Created in 2024

Based on Bach’s The Art of Fugue and performed by the il Convito ensemble, this is an imaginative choreographic work that uses video to reveal different dimensions of the body and movement. Far from being an abstract work, Close Up is deeply moving in its inventiveness.

Presentation

With his original and often dazzling choreographic language, Noé Soulier is constantly exploring movement and the intention behind it. For Close Up, he constructed a score based on action verbs—catch, dodge, strike, throw... like so many impulses which will modify the gestures and trajectory of the bodies on stage. Accompanied by five musicians from the Il Convito ensemble performing some of Bach’s contrapuntal works—including his famous Art of Fugue—and employing a subtle real-time video setup, Close Up is a show that is as inventive as it is moving, eschewing all abstraction to immerse us in what the choreographer calls “a polyphony of affects.”
