A little noise to bring magic back to the world
The word “lesson,” past a certain age, starts taking on a somewhat negative connotation... And it is in that interstice created by the pride of adulthood that fake knowledge and real ignorance often lodge themselves. And it is in the one created by this remarkable and childish exercise that we can find a way to bring magic back to our relationship to knowledge and culture. In the nine years since the Lessons from the University were first created, it hasn't been an uncommon sight to see eyebrows raise at the idea that the word “lesson” could be the right one to talk about a speech delivered at a festival like the Festival d'Avignon. Yet this exercise, at once humble and pretentious, forces us to listen intently and for a long time to an uninterrupted speech, and to accept the silences of the speaker.
