Robert Desnos, born in 1900 in Paris, grew up in workers' areas of the capital which then featured in his work. A prominent surrealist, he was an activist-thinker and an active member of the Resistance, which cost him his life. Deported in 1945, he died in the name of freedom, “It's not poetry which should be free, it is the poet.”
