Emilie Valantin

France / Created in 1999

Presentation

It's a treat for the audience to watch the string puppets manipulated by Emilie Valantin in her classic style, on a table or behind the puppet theatre. Short plays by Argentinian writer Roberto Arlt (similar to action theatre - Punch's farce and A Sensitive Man) are like extracts from short stories - taken from the theatre of atmosphere - such as The Little Hunchback, and can be viewed as if they were water paintings. The atmosphere of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the century is recreated by the obvious style of the props. They show brothels, insalubrious cafes or luxurious salons in which the puppets take their miniature and symbolic seats. These tiny pieces of wood-fashioned furniture, in the style of an Italian or Viennese brasseries of the time, or from the homes of country-folk, or copies of Bauhaus, inspired designs, make the scenes vibrate with life and truth. When we converse, we do it better seated, talking about dreams, journeys, but also about society and the spleen that it generates.
