Every year, the Festival d’Avignon invites Gwenaël Morin to create a show as part of the Démonter les remparts pour finir le pont (Dismantle the walls to finish the bridge) project. As its playfully provocative title suggests, its aim is to turn obstacles into opportunities for collective creation. In previous editions, the director met local performers who, in his own words, helped him make theatre. With them at his side, he once again takes on one of the great works of the repertoire, guided by his instinctive relationship with the text. Never afraid to tackle ancient works – sometimes dating back millennia – Gwenaël Morin’s theatre refuses to erase their fundamental strangeness, instead embracing the distance that separates us from these texts as a necessary condition for dialogue.
