Thomas Ostermeier

After studying direction in Berlin in the 1980s, Thomas Ostermeier made a name for himself as the artistic director of the Baracke at the Deutsches Theatre, where, from 1996, he developed an acclaimed contemporary repertoire. He took over as director of the Schaubühne in 1999, where he has continued to reinterpret both classics and contemporary works, always grounding them in the political and social realities of his time. His incisive and engaged theatre explores the tensions of the modern world and the place of the individual within power structures. An associate artist at the Festival d’Avignon in 2004, he has presented several productions here, including The Seagull in 2012 and Richard III in 2015.
