A project by the Festival d’Avignon, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and Lia Rodrigues

The Transmission Impossible programme is back. Headed by a new artist and her collaborators, it introduces the Festival d’Avignon to an ever-growing number of participants from around the world over the course of 12 days. Supported by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès as part of its Artistes dans le Cité fellowship programme, this international summer laboratory continues to foster the act of transmission by offering young artists and recent graduates in the performing arts a fully immersive experience in the Festival, through masterclasses, discussion forums, hand-picked performances, and meetings with artists from the Festival’s programme. These emerging arts professionals benefit from privileged access to performances, rehearsals, and the artists featured in the programme of the 80th Festival d’Avignon.

This year, Lia Rodrigues becomes the programme’s artistic coordinator, succeeding Mathilde Monnier. A major Brazilian choreographer on the international scene, she is also deeply engaged in transmission work. Since 2011, she has directed the Escola Livre de Dança da Maré, based in the Maré favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, she has developed what she calls a “mutating pedagogy,” outside the usual frameworks of formal training programmes. Twelve students from the Escola Livre de Dança da Maré will join the new Transmission Impossible cohort, bringing the total number of participants for this edition to 55.

Deeply committed to building artistic communities, Lia Rodrigues has surrounded herself with Calixto Neto, Cristina Moura, Dani Lima, and Silvia Soter to develop a new project, a new way for these young artists to experience the Festival, and to co-create with them a space for exchange, learning, and artistic experimentation.
