Since the 1990s, he has been crafting a singular body of work, capturing the lives of Lisbon’s underprivileged and Cape Verdean immigrants. A screening of one of his films will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.

Presentation

A major figure in contemporary cinema, Pedro Costa has been producing a unique body of work since the 1990s, following the destiny of a group of sub-proletarians from Lisbon and immigrants from Cape Verde. FIDMarseille and the Festival d'Avignon are inviting the Portuguese filmmaker to a screening followed by a discussion of his film Juventude em marcha (2006), at the Collection Lambert.

On the suburbs of Lisbon, the Cape Verdean district of Fontainhas has been almost completely destroyed. Ventura, a former construction worker, wanders between the remnants of the past and the new low-cost housing estates. All the young people he meets become his children.

Screening followed by a discussion with Pedro Costa moderated by Gonzalo de Pedro.
