Presentation

France is locking up more and more people. With 77,677 people incarcerated for only 61,358 available places, prison density is on average close to 148%, and exceeds 250% in some establishments. As a result, France has been condemned several times by the European Court of Human Rights. And since today's prisoners will be free again tomorrow, how can we reconcile human rights and detention? How can we think about the meaning of punishment without denying the need for justice? How can we think about rehabilitation after years of isolation in degraded conditions?
