Presentation

If we should continue to use the terms dancers and actors - in fact the word, interpreters is a more precise and unifying definition - it is in fact they who clarify the relationship, around the character of Bérénice, between dance and drama. Their bodies are like witnesses to a certain antiquity, to a certain mythology : from that time when dramatic art first came into being, when a play was a homage to the children of dead warriors; from a time when laws were not written, like that Roman law that prohibits a Roman emperor from marrying a foreign queen, where to accede to power one had to give up one's life as a man. In tackling Racine are we not an attempting to understand the rapport we have with our origins ? A return to sources places the play at the border between two kingdoms, the kingdom of the dead and the kingdom of the living. One director - Frédéric Fisbach, and one choreographer - Bernardo Montet, have worked together to give this Racinian text a new lease of life. An Israeli dancer, Tal Beit-Halachmi, plays (or interprets) Bérénice and reads part of the text in Hebrew.
