Presentation

Rwanda's genocide in 1994 was an abomination that took place while the world looked on, and nothing managed to prevent. It inspired feelings of revolt for the spectator nations that seemed powerless to act, and particularly for Jacques Delcuvellerie and Marie-Françoise Collard who initiated Groupov's project. Rwanda 1994 is a documentary play that combines witness-accounts, fiction writing, documentary images and images of fiction, traditional music and song, a choir and an orchestra, Rwandans from Rwanda, from Europe as well as Europeans. The
question of rejection by "the other" can lead to the terrible events that are so well-known in our recent world history: the very European genocides of the Jews or the Gypsies in the Second World War. The same mechanisms - the idea of excluding those who are deemed to be inferior human-beings, in widespread indifference - took root in Rwanda, with the horrific consequences that we know. That human tragedy can be seen as a sort of extreme within a more general context of North-South relations and development - a context where on the ground people face a daily hecatomb, from hunger, disease and war. Rwanda 1994 is an artistic expression of the imbalance of relationships in the world and much more besides.
