Gregory Maqoma
If Gregory Maqoma embraced a career as a dancer and choreographer, it was to escape the violent political tensions in South Africa that shook Soweto at the end of the 1980's. He continued his training in Belgium and was the prize-winner of numerous awards. For him, dance is an art that permits him to become artistically and politically engaged. A major figure in African contemporary dance, he works with artists of his generation including the South African dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo, whom he has invited on stage today. She is also taking part in the project Refuse the Hour by William Kentridge.
