Led by Antoine de Baecque, the official historian of the Festival d’Avignon, researchers and artists will look back on the surprising and exceptional history of how, in the immediate aftermath of the war, in a mid-sized town and alongside a great contemporary art exhibition in the Palais des Papes, the organisation by Jean Vilar of an Art week, with its seven performances, laid the foundation for what would become the greatest theatre festival in the world.
