English: global language, local theatre?

English is commonly referred to as the globe’s lingua franca, but what does this mean for theatre? How does it shape how work is made both within and beyond countries where English is the first language? What does it mean for linguistic difference, peripheral languages, and the cultures they are a part of? A conversation on English and its prevalence in theatre making and the realities it is capable (or not capable) of creating.
