In this new fragment of history and humanity, Maguy Marin ferociously explores the nature of violence and its perpetual recurrence.
The content of this page
A leading figure in contemporary dance, Maguy Marin has built a politically-committed body of work, full of individuals trying to form communities while caught in a storm. Inspired by Thucydides’s History of the Peloponnesian War, a masterpiece of ancient literature, this new creation remains faithful to her convictions. On the stage, two men and two women find themselves surrounded by costumes they’ll wear, objects they’ll use, and screens they’ll follow. Lost or troubled children, they latch onto each new hint like archeologists finding fragments of buried and forgotten history. They play the games of life and of domination that overwhelm us when faced with weaker than us. And at the heart of the show, an attempt to understand the mechanisms that lead to war and create violence. If the answers are neither easy nor immediate, actively and joyfully resisting the events trying to overpower us is a first step towards accepting the mystery at the heart of all living things.
An Athenian aristocrat, philosopher, and historian born c. 460 BC, Thucydides was one of the strategists of the Peloponnesian War. Exiled after his failure to defend the city of Amphipolis, he later returned to Athens, where he wrote History of the Peloponnesian War (of which only eight books survived), with the goal of writing “an eternal treasure.”
