From the mountains of Epirus to the Peloponnese, when the village loses one of its members, its inhabitants sing and dance for nights. Lamenta revisits this salutary tradition in the light of our modern societies.

Presentation

From the mountains of Epirus to the Peloponnese, miroloi celebrate the missing. When the community loses one of its members—a death, an exile, or even a wedding—everyone comes together to sing and dance over long nights of resilience. Struck by the power of those ancestral laments they compare to the blues, because this rhythm speaks of the earth, of roots, and of nostalgia, Koen Augustijnen and Rosalba Torres Guerrero were convinced of the importance of working on traditions in the light of our modern world. What are the spaces and means we have access to in our societies to overcome grief and loss? The choreographers, inviting nine Greek dancers to the stage, create a micro-community to viscerally experience the remanence of cultural legacies and begin a salutary music and dance marathon. “(...) to exteriorise sadness, frustration, anger, loss, so as to be able to rejoin society.
