Born in 1947 in Kinshasa (then Belgium Congo), Sony Labou Tansi lived in Brazzaville where he died from AIDS in 1995. Novelist, playwright, poet and rebel, he refused “poetic form” defending a form of poetry with no form, where language is handed over to chaos. He opened a new road for a generation of authors in Africa. Machin la Hernie (Wotsit the Hernia) is the original and unabridged version of the novel L'État Honteux (Shameful State) published in 1981. In a flowing stream of words, it describes a typical tyrant. L'Acte de Respirer (The Act of Breathing) is a long poem written in the early 1970s.
