Fine art graduates and actresses, the young Norwegian duo Toril Goksøyr and Camilla Martens decided to set up their own company, Goksøyr & Martens. Their performances are created if they were works of art on stage – informative, political and hilarious – they shift the way we look at reality, distract the audience from their spectator status.
It would be good to do something political
Observe the observer, subvert dominant attitudes, stymie any bids to misappropriate causes. Inside a glass case, an enormous photo of two young women displays the obscene contentment of happiness in advertisements. The artists strike a nonchalant pose and look the passers-by straight in the eye. This over-acted situation is conceived as a parody of advertisements. The text, the dialogue, is open to numerous interpretations. It can be seen as a response to the political hypocrisy of advertising, but also as an attack on the art world which, out of pure vanity, opts for political correctness. A window which is continually being cleaned, separating two worlds.
