The lighting is minimal, the space is empty and contained, the three ages of man follow one after the other. The dance area seems like a “ black page, a gap in someone's memory”, says the choreographer. In that space, four acts of the same dance piece are performed three times over. A group of children aged from seven to ten (Groupe Grenade), another group made up of adults (Groupe Émile Dubois) and a group of older dancers (Groupe Mézall) form this triptych. The reproduction of similar movements, the same steps, the same sequences are performed on the stage according to the physical capacity of each one of the dancers. Jean-Claude Gallotta explains that, “We see each group in relay with the others. People come out of the darkness, present a piece which others are going to dance when it's their turn, like a timeless testimony, always linked to memory.” Based in Grenoble, Jean-Claude Gallotta was the first choreographer appointed as director of a National Theatre (Scène Nationale) in France. For more than twenty years, his choreographic poems have been encountering the narration of great myths from Dom Juan to Ulysses, to more personal works such as Mammane, Ivan Vaffan, 99 duos... In writing his piece on the musical themes of the Strigall Group from Grenoble, Jean-Claude Gallotta, re-worked and re-invented some passages from his older pieces, arranged around new ones. Through
the dissimilarities within the same dance when performed by the children, the adults and the older people, Trois Générations enables us to see the body shaped by time, a tributary of its age.
