I define a solo as a component of a collective experience, an attitude towards the group, a sort of choreographic focussing. Each time I act, even alone on stage, it is to share an experience, whence comes a fascination for conjuring up forms of absence, giving a name to what is outside of oneself. In asking Christian to join me in this project, even though he features in many of the projects I initiate, it was to show how this person makes me an artist because I learn so much from that interpretation when I am in the position of choreographer. (Rachid Ouramdane) It was an opportunity to bring back our relationship and the solo figure. What does that do to the imagination, a lone person facing people who have come to watch that person ? Rachid improvises and I can see what he cannot. And the confidence they have in my own view, I have to convey it to Rachid in the suggestion that is made. The creative space is an extremely important point of departure for this work, to work out the lone figure. (Christian Rizzo)

For me, solos are the closest way of furthering one's work, the universe of each choreographer. It implies more responsibility and there's more at stake. I discovered Javier's work in Portugal. Two solos, including Transatlantic. I have always been fascincated by his quite personal movement and by a particular harmony and beauty. He has a mixture of Latin American energy, European rigour and English subtle humour. (Leonor Keil)

The best comparison between being your own choreographer and creating a solo for someone else is undoubtedly that of painting a self-portrait and someone else's portrait. In both cases it is a portrait, and not a definitive work because it is carried out at the moment of the meeting between the painter and their subject, where the former is trying to capture something of the spirit of the latter. The acceptance and will of the dancer to be observed and provoked, can only enrich and refine the portrait. (Javier De Frutos)
