Presentation

In the Hungarian Tzigane dialect "besh o drom" means literally "sit down properly on the road", but it is used to mean "accomplish your destiny". Born in 1999, the Budapest-based group Besh o droM today forms an electro-acoustic group of ten musicians, combining musical "bizarreries" found in everyday life and objects, traditional folk roots and wild jazz improvisation. Their music is inspired by traditional Hungarian, Balkan and Tzigane melodies, as well as chants from the Middle East. The musicians take the liberty of introducing other music to suit their taste and mix all these musical genres and horizons. The group has teamed up with a DJ-scratch magician, bringing together traditional music and the best of the sounds from the disco - the virtuosity of a Tzigane violin unites with jazz improvisations, a fantastic brass section is mixed with funk. The sound produced by Besh o droM is an example of the vital, creative energy that flourishes in this region of Europe bringing about a new kind of East-West fusion. Besh o droM's first CD called Macsó hímzés (a play on words that has a local folk connotation meaning literally "macho embroidery"), came out on the FONO Records label in October 2000. The group has a big following in Hungary and has already toured in Europe. In April 2000 they were at the BIG Torino Festival, Piazza di Castello in Turin; at the Thousand Year Voyage, for the Tzigane Music Festival at the Barbican Centre in London; in June, during the Fête de la Musique at the Divan du Monde in Paris, at the 10th International Jewish Music Festival at the Rhythm Factory in Londres, at the Glastonbury Festival in England, Greenpeace Venue and the Ballroom, at the Oerol Festival in the Netherlands; and in August at the Mladi Levi Festival in Ljubljana in Slovenia. During the 2001 Season, they are performing in several festivals as part of the Hungarian Culture Season in France, Magyart.
