Presentation

A "foul toad", "hedgehog", "elfish-marked", "abortive", "rooting hog": all are images Shakespeare puts in the mouths of his characters to illustrate the ugliness of Richard III, the cruel and blood-thirsty king who kills his brothers to become the ruler of England. Geneviève de Kermabon was less attracted to Richard III as a political play than as a play about the king's inhuman behaviour. She sees his attitude born out of his disgrace and the inhuman regard that those close to him, including his mother, cast upon him. The director does not however, seek to justify the various acts of cruelty committed by a tyrant. On the contrary, it is a quest for truth among his most contradictory acts: when he loves, cries or kills.
