The Medusa's juxtaposed beauty and horror have fascinated people since Antiquity. At the same time a mirror and a mask, this head terrifies those who dare look at her. An image of death, an image of the mother-figure and a maritime symbol, Medusa contains the secret of theatre: a presence and an absence that will forever remain beyond our grasp. We could say that the role of television is like Medusa in Angelin Preljocaj's chor-eographic work, as we can never be sure what the shadows are, whether they are representing a global scene, or whether they describe an intimate contemporary media tool. The onlooker is petrified because they tend to be lazy, because they want to be carried towards something that it would be easy to call "The Truth". The dance steps in this performance are determined, and in opposition to illusion. The body is restricted beyond the unplanned occurrences of work and the obstacles to be overcome, and that which can affect artistic choices, far from the gaze of the Medusa.
