Presentation

La Caixa de Imagens, is a box of images. It is a puppet theatre in a room and a miniature stage. The box rests on a tripod, and has two small openings behind two small black curtains, one for the puppets, one for the single spectator who watches a three-minute show. Some scenes are silent, some have dialogue, and the puppeteers wear costumes that are appropriate to the tales being told. La Caixa de Imagens is a Brazilian company based in Sao Paulo. Its origins lie in the travelling box that can still be found in Brazil, and that came from the travelling theatres popular in the streets and at fairgrounds in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe. The Caixa de Imagens conjures up a romantic idea of the squares of Sao Paulo, with the barrel-organ player, old itinerant photographer and chocolate vendor.
