Presentation

Brazilian society is haunted by the sin of the father: Nelson Rodrigues' plays are about this type of devastating guilt found in all the different communities of the country. The original sin is paternal, residing in sexual gratification from a woman who is not the mother of his children, usually a prostitute. This reality is born out of the country's history of slavery.Herculano, a father and a widower, represents the master figure and the male. He could be the owner of a big coffee or sugar cane plantation, and also the owner of slaves over whom he has the power to decide if they live or die, and who is permitted to take his pleasure as he chooses. Alain Olivier, the director deals with this theme of criss-crossing desires and passions that are by nature, irrepressible. His play is illuminated by the sensation of being in another time, a strange impression that comes from a major foreign text. The entire universe is present, perfectly reconstructed in the close relationships between the characters. On stage, he creates, with a controlled geography, another planet that highlights the most sombre crudeness of human beings as well as the most serene joys.
