Dimitris Papaioannou

After gaining recognition as a painter and comic book artist, Dimitris Papaioannou turned to the performing arts as a director, choreographer, performer, and set, costume, and light designer, working with the Edafos Dance Theatre groupe for seventeen years. His direction of the Opening and Closing Ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens brought him international acclaim. His personal work is a hybrid form of dance, a mix of physical theatre, of the art of movement, and of performances with which he explores creation, identity, and the legacy of our Western cultural memory. Performed at the 71st edition of the Festival d’Avignon, The Great Tamer testified to this intimate quest of man exposing his fears and questioning his environment and his destiny. In 2018, he was the first artist to create a new show for the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Since She.
