Christoph Marthaler
Swiss German director Christoph Marthaler was born in Erlenbach. Initially an oboist, he studied at the Jacques Lecoq school in the post-May 1968 period, before turning to directing. Many of his shows have been staged in Zurich, Basel, and at Berlin’s Volksbühne. From 2000 to 2004, he served as director of the Schauspielhaus in Zurich. Active in both theatre and opera, he has received numerous international awards for his productions, which play with continuous shifts in tone, blending slowness, irony, and multiple European languages, in an approach that draws as much from the Dada movement as from music and song. He returns to Avignon after having been an associate artist in 2010 and having staged several shows that have become part of the Festival’s legend.
